Talk Bowling – Episode #101

Question from Terry:
Q – I use a 16lbs bowling ball when i bowl.  what is the different between a 15lbs and a 16lbs bowling ball when it comes to bowling?

A – We receive questions like this quite often.  The truth of the matter is back in the day (say pre 2000), you wanted a heavier bowling ball that could provide more driving power into the pin deck.  However, with today’s technology, they are finding out that it is not the complete story.  You still want the heaviest bowling ball you can control, but you don’t have to have a 16# bowling ball to succeed.

Nowadays, you can change your bowling ball weight to also help you change your speed. I don’t know how advisable this is, but it may work for some bowlers.

  1. There have been 21 perfect games if you don't count special events like the summer series. The last perfect game to televised was bowled by Jason Belmonte in the Mike Aulby division qualifying round for the 2011-2012 World Championship.

  2. Im bowler on my highschool team and i do about 2 other leagues a week and any youth tournament that comes around. i throw the ball at about 15-16 mph with 325+ rpm. at my home lanes i am having trouble keeping the ball on our wooden lanes even with the weakest ball in my arsenal the ebonite cyclone. i was wondering if you could lead me to a ball that would be better on these lanes than that ball. other than that i have an aggressive arsenal including the taboo blue/silver, invasion, jigsaw trap, 607a the first mission and the new defiant. thanks for any help and for the making the best bowling ball website

    • Hi Kyle,

There are several options you can consider. First in the polyester line, any of the new Pyramid Path bowling balls or the Brunswick Target Zone series would do nicely. The Storm Natural Pearl is a good, non-reactive urethane selection. You can also consider any of the Brunswick Slingshot series, the Storm Tropical Breeze series, the Columbia 300 Scout, the Elite Asteroid, or perhaps the AMF 300 Smoke. All of these models are available at bowlingball.com at super prices.

You may receive other suggestions from our staff members or from other visitors reading your comment. We hope this helps and good luck with your Junior career. Let us hear from you from time to time and if we can help in some way, just place another comment as needed.

      • thank you for the help i do have a tzone but its not enough, ill be sure to check in from time to time, and im positive my next purchase will be from bowlingball.com thanks to the really great prices

        • OK, since the target zone doesn't hook enough, try a mild reactive ball or a regular urethane ball next to fit between your aggressive equipment and the plastic balls you may own. There are some articles on entry level reactive balls you might wish to refer to listed in the BowlVersity section of our site. Let's us know how we can help and the best of luck, Kyle.

        • Kyle-
I have a couple ideas for you. I have a similar problem at times because I have slow ball speed and high rpm, but my home lanes are on the drier side. My first thought is that if your TZone is on the close-ish side, perhaps a plastic ball with a real core and an aggressive drilling might be your solution. I saw a guy in my league this week throwing the Taboo Spare about your speed and rev rate and it was pretty killer. My second thought is something that Rich already mentioned, and that's Urethane. I use a lot of urethane because of my style, and with the right surface it would probably match what you're looking for if you don't think the first option would be strong enough. My only caveat would be to watch out for it hooking early, because urethane tends to do that (at least I hear that isn't only my problem).

          • My last thought is something a little out of the box. I would think that if a cyclone is too strong, a Slingshot or Tropical Breeze probably won't be much better (granted, I don't have much experience comparing them). What I might recommend is trying to find an older bowling ball that you could consider to be a predecessor to these (for example, I use a Brunswick Monster SlayR, which seems to me like a lower tech Slingshot). The leaps in bowling ball technology have been pretty big in the last decade, and you could probably find an older Brunswick, Columbia, or Hammer pearl that would fill the spot of a dry lane ball pretty well.

  3. I have sent you a few e-mails asking questions. I am wonder how to you bowl on a long oil pattern vs. a short oil pattern. I know the difference between them which is how long the oil goes down the lane.

  4. The answer to the question is 21

I also use the Bruinswisk Sidewinder
