Question from YouTube:

Q – I have an Ebonite Cyclone (my first ball) with a standard layout for length (since I didn’t have a ball to measure my PAP at the time). Later I got an IQ Tour Fusion and yesterday got an Optimus both with the same layout. (drilled for angular back end, I believe 3 3/8th PIN to PAP). I was previously dismayed that my Cyclone and IQ tour Fusion seemed to perform exactly the same despite the difference in cost. Now I’m really confused because the Optimus also gives me the same as the other two. Is this Normal? I can take the Fusion and find a nice line to the pocket, and the Optimus seems to be able to play that same line. Playing deeper in the Oil or more of the Track area doesn’t seem to matter. A few times I’ve even gotten Turkey’s Alternating Balls on the same line to the pocket.

Question from YouTube:

Q – Can a two-hander roll the inside part of the ball like pros?

Question from YouTube:

Q – Can you be a good bowler while squeezing? I can’t throw the ball without squeezing my thumb against the inside of the thumb hole. If I don’t squeeze, the ball falls off my hand and goes nowhere. I average 183 right now but that’s mostly cause I miss spares. Thanks! – Steven Vincent

Talk Bowling Episode 115: Why Am I Missing My Target Right & Vintage Bowling Balls

Episodes  Comments Off on Talk Bowling Episode 115: Why Am I Missing My Target Right & Vintage Bowling Balls
May 242016

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the world’s largest bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from Twitter:

Q – Why am I consistently missing my target to the right? @Jason_Korn on Twitter

A – There are several reasons why you could be missing your target to the right:

  1. You’re not getting your shoulders closed before release/your shoulders are too open.

  2. Swing path alignment – Your arm may be swinging behind your body.

  3. You may actually be walking in that direction and your entire body isn’t square to the line.

  4. Dominant eye – Right handed bowlers who are left eye dominant will often miss right. I have this issue and I have to aim 2 boards inside of my target in order to hit it. (Dustin)

Question from YouTube:

Q – Tony why is it that in some balls that you use finger inserts but in some balls you don’t? Is there a reason? Greg Khan

A –  Greg, great question.  As you have noticed over time I will change my grip.  I will bounce between grips, no grips and even sarge easter for a period of time.  I am looking for a specific feel and I use those different grips to achieve that feel.  I do not bowl as much as I used to so there can be long gaps between bowling and sometimes I just need a certain feel to get the desired release and motion I am looking for.  I am a big advocate for the way the ball feels in your hand and I am always willing to play with grips, spans and pitches to get that certain feel.

Question from YouTube:

Q – Why don’t companies do re-releases of classic balls that were and still are so popular years later?

A – Brunswick does have a vintage series where they release updated versions of old favorites. So far they’ve released the Johnny Petraglia Vintage LT-48, Gold Rhino Pro and Danger Zone. Ebonite re-released the Gamebreaker as the Gamebreaker 2.

There are a few reasons why many companies may not re-release classic balls:

  1. Lane conditions and oils have changed so much since some balls were released. If you threw a Piranha in the 90’s and the re-released the exact ball today, you’re not going to see the same reaction.

  2. Many times they’re unable to get the same materials that a ball was once made with or they source their resin from a different company.

All companies do use parts of older favorites even to this day. For example, the Gas Mask core from the Black Widow has been used in numerous balls. Same with the Inverted Fe2 core from the Hy-Road which is a variation of the core used in the Black Thunder, T-Road Solid, etc.

The same with coverstocks. The Cyclone uses the GB 10.7 coverstock that was used on The One. The Storm Match series, Ride series and Tropical series all use the Reactor coverstock that’s been used for years on balls like the Agent and Spit Fire.

Upcoming Product Releases:

June 7 – Storm Snap Lock & Rocket Ship

June 8 – Motiv Freestyle Black/Blue Pearl and Black/Pink Pearl

June 21 – Roto Grip Hustle Purple/Raspberry/Orange and Silver/Aqua/Yellow

Talk Bowling Episode 114: PAP and Plastic Bowling Balls & Why Do I Tug The Ball?

Episodes  Comments Off on Talk Bowling Episode 114: PAP and Plastic Bowling Balls & Why Do I Tug The Ball?
Apr 292016

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the world’s largest bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from Facebook:

Q – Does PAP affect plastic bowling balls?

A – Your PAP isn’t determined by the ball but by how you release it. Your PAP should be measured just as it’s hitting the lane. This is before the core or lane surface is able to have an effect on the roll of the ball. A plastic ball is the best kind of bowling ball to measure your PAP with though, as it will have the least amount of flare.

Here is the link to the video we did on finding your PAP (positive axis point):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsYDqvSLplY

Question from YouTube:

Q – How do I stop tugging the bowling ball?

A –  There are a few reasons why you may be tugging the ball but the most common culprit is timing. I know for me personally, whenever my feet get fast, I tend to miss inside. The ball has to catch up with my feet and I end up tugging the ball inside.

Another possible reason could be not keeping your shoulders square to the line. Opening your shoulders too much to the lane can cause you to pull your bowling shoulder back to the line during the downswing, and therefore tugging the ball inside your intended line.

Upcoming Product Releases:

May 10 – DV8 Outcast Blue Bruiser (new color)

May 10 – Pyramid Pathogen will be re-released

Talk Bowling Episode 113: Does Plugging My Bowling Ball Effect Ball Motion?

Episodes  Comments Off on Talk Bowling Episode 113: Does Plugging My Bowling Ball Effect Ball Motion?
Apr 152016

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the largest internet bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from Facebook:

Q – For those people who purchase used equipment, how does plugging and re-drilling affect ball motion? On another note, does plugging and re-drilling increase the likelihood of cracking?

A – As far as ball motion goes plugging and re-drilling should not affect it much. If the holes being plugged are normal depths and not odd places on the original drill then you should see minimal effect on overall motion. With that being said if the holes are deeper than normal or in a place where they may have removed more mass from the core of the ball then you may see some variances in ball motion after the ball has been plugged and re-drilled. Your pro shop operator should know before they do the work if there is a chance of this after the ball has been re-drilled.

As for the second part of your question about cracking. The general answer is no, plus materials used today are very advanced and should not promote cracking in those areas. There is always a chance since the material used to plug a hole is different than the material of the coverstock, that the ball could crack in those areas. Most times we see this when the ball has been subjected to temperature changes or prolonged time in extreme temperatures. For the most part, plugging and re-drilling is perfectly fine and a great way to play with layouts or try new balls for less money.

Upcoming Product Releases:
April 19 – Storm Match, Match Pearl & 2 new Tropical Storms
April 27 – Motiv Venom Cobra
May 10 – New Brunswick Rhino series & 2 new T Zones
May 10 – Pyramid Pathogen will be re-released
