Question from YouTube:

Q – I have an Ebonite Cyclone (my first ball) with a standard layout for length (since I didn’t have a ball to measure my PAP at the time). Later I got an IQ Tour Fusion and yesterday got an Optimus both with the same layout. (drilled for angular back end, I believe 3 3/8th PIN to PAP). I was previously dismayed that my Cyclone and IQ tour Fusion seemed to perform exactly the same despite the difference in cost. Now I’m really confused because the Optimus also gives me the same as the other two. Is this Normal? I can take the Fusion and find a nice line to the pocket, and the Optimus seems to be able to play that same line. Playing deeper in the Oil or more of the Track area doesn’t seem to matter. A few times I’ve even gotten Turkey’s Alternating Balls on the same line to the pocket.

Question from YouTube:

Q – Can a two-hander roll the inside part of the ball like pros?

Talk Bowling Episode 121: How To Choose The Right Thumb Accessories

Talk Bowling – Episode #121

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the world’s largest bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from YouTube:

Q – Release aids… Baby Powder, Hand Conditioner, Hada Patch, Thumb Sock, Thumb Saver, etc… For years I have struggled with releasing my thumb from the ball. I don’t know if the ball was just drilled incorrectly causing my thumb to not be able to relax or what. But up until now the solution has been to simply make the thumb hole larger(to the point that it simply falls off my thumb, forcing me to cup my wrist, squeeze the ball till the moment of release, and causing pain on the back of my hand). On my most recent ball I refused to make the thumb bigger but did have the guys in the pro shop file out a little bit of material out of the thumb insert for me . I wanted to find a solution that works and still allowed enough friction on the thumb to be able to pick up the ball using only that finger. I used quite a bit of baby powder and kind of got the hang of it (while making a huge mess) before finding these Hada Patches. I use 2 or three of them on my thumb to cover the spots that stick, and this seems to allow me to relax my thumb and get a smooth, consistent release. What is your opinion of this particular product? Have you tried any of the others that I mentioned? Are there still others out there that might be better or different? Would a wrist device also aid in the smooth release of the thumb from the ball just by virtue of the angle you are forced to hold the ball while using such a device?

Question from Facebook:

Q – Wrist rotation on release. Trying to get my thumb to stop at 11 or 12 o’clock, I’m “mostly" successful but need more consistency. Suggestions, exercises, etc?

Talk Bowling Episode 120: Should I Have My Bowling Ball Repaired?

Episode #120

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the world’s largest bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from YouTube:

Q – I’m 41 , have been throwing the same way since I was 18. I was taught to carry and throw the ball like you would a suitcase. I am trying to change over to a more conventional throw of behind the ball and letting thumb come out first and rotation with my fingers on release. Is there an easy way to train off the lanes to get the “memory" of my arm to program this way? I tend to mess up on league and throw both ways, keeping me in the high 160’s and want to get better.

Question from Facebook:

Q – I’ve had several instances of ball damage at my local bowling center lately. They’ve “repaired" my ball by filling gouges and missing chunks with clear resin at no charge. My questions are how much can this affect the balls performance? What is the centers responsibility to the customer for lanes that are continuing to cause damage to balls from screw heads that are sticking up in gutters?

Talk Bowling Episode 116: How To Create More Ball Speed & Can I Sand A Pearl Bowling Ball?

Episodes  Comments Off on Talk Bowling Episode 116: How To Create More Ball Speed & Can I Sand A Pearl Bowling Ball?
Jun 092016

Talk Bowling – Episode #116

Talk Bowling is proud to be bringing you the latest information from the bowling industry, bowling tips and updates from the world’s largest bowling website, bowlingball.com.

Question from Facebook:

Q – I can’t get my speed up more than 13 mph. I’ve tried more backswing, faster approach, even using lots of power behind it. It just doesn’t get any faster. Any tips? From Matthew Flores

A – There are several ways to create ball speed, the easiest being taking faster steps to the line. Getting your body moving faster will create more momentum behind the ball once it leaves your hand. However, you’ve tried this and it isn’t working for you.

The most likely reason that you can’t create more ball speed is because your swing is too muscled. When you try to throw the ball harder, you actually can accomplish the opposite. Much like in golf when you try to crush the ball, your swing speed will drop, where if you swing nice and easy, you relax your arms and your swing speed increases.

In bowling, you need to let gravity do the work for you. Let the ball swing your arm, not the opposite. Doing this will relax the muscles in your arm, freeing up your swing to create more ball speed.

Question from YouTube:

Q – What if I only have one ball & I can’t seem to get my ball to hook into the pocket? What should I do? – Marcus Png

A – Marcus, there are a few things you can do if your ball isn’t hooking enough for the lane conditions.

You can slow down your ball speed allowing the coverstock more time to grip the lane surface.

You can add more revolutions. With this you need to be sure to add more revolutions with forward roll though, opposed to side roll. Side roll will make the ball skid more where you need the ball to hook sooner.

Play a tighter line to the pocket. Play a more direct line which will reduce the impact of the lane condition.

Question from Twitter:

Q – I want to use a 500 grit abralon pad on a reactive pearl, no polish. is this sensible for heavy oil? @marinexmo

A – A sanded pearl could definitely be a good option on heavy oil for rev dominant or high rev bowlers. Any speed dominant or low rev bowlers should shy away from pearls on heavy conditions.

It’s becoming more of a trend to put matte finishes on pearl reactives. It’s a great way to smooth out the backend reaction and have the ball read the lane a bit earlier.
