We
are very pleased to have a special guest with us for the next few
episodes of Talk Bowling.  Rich Carrubba will be joining us and we will
be shooting multiple episodes while he is in town working in our
offices.  Rich currently writes articles and shoot corresponding videos
for many of those articles for our site.  We decided to fly Rich for a
week to help us out in the office with some other aspects of the site
and we wanted to get him in on a few episodes for our viewers.

Quick bio from Rich

Question from Bob:
Q – Is there a good way to practice getting your thumb out of the ball at the release point and not too late or too early?

A
– The best way to achieve this is simply by practicing as much as
possible. The consistency of your point of release is directly
associated to your overall timing.  The more you practice, the better
your timing becomes and the more consistent your timing is your point of
release will follow.  Just make sure when you practice that you are
practicing the correct things.  Do not worry about score and don’t
really even worry about if you strike or get to the pocket.  Work on
your footwork, tempo and balance, these are the things that will improve
your timing.

Question from Paul:
Q – I have a mold of my thumb because I have never found someone who could drill my thumb exactly.  Do you do mols for thumbs?

A
– Paul this is a common question and the answer is yes.  We offer
services to both create a mold from your existing ball and to create the
thumb slug from this mold.  These services are currently only offered
when you purchase our custom drilling service.  Right now we are
offering to pick up your existing ball to copy the specs and we can
create that mold for you and there is no charge for the pick up.  If you
have any other questions pleas feel free to let our customer service
team at
bowlingball.com know.

2 Responses to “Talk Bowling #70 – Introduction to Rich Carrubba”

  1. Rich taught me back in the 1970's about my approach. I am having trouble with my arm not catching up to where I am as I approach the foul line. Could you ask him how I can get my arm to move faster so it is outstretched by the time I get up to the foul line? He taught me at Springfield, Virginia probably around 1979 (when he was on the PBA tour).

    • Patti,

Hello. I will try to make suggestions to help improve your timing issues described in your comment. Since it has been more than 30 years since your coaching session in Virginia, I am quite sure many physical challenges with your bowling have transpired during that time until now. For one thing, none of us are any younger and we certainly do not have the strength or flexibility we once had as I am sure you will agree.

My first suggestion is to consult a local certified bowling instructor near your home area and ask for help with your timing and swing. For a modest investment, you most likely will be better served with a coach standing near you while you bowl and diagnosing your technique and then making suggestions.

I am at a distinct disadvantage trying to make suggestions and not being able to watch you bowl. So please understand that you might be better off using the services of a local bowling professional to help you make progress.

With that being said, my guess is that you have very late timing. You are likely carrying the ball for at least one full step longer than needed before beginning the arm swing motion. If you are using a four step approach (kindly excuse me for not recalling specific details – it has been more than 30 years and many thousands of people I have coached during that time), try and begin the movement (pushaway) of the bowling ball to begin the swing cycle slightly before you take your first step and do not hold the ball motionless after you begin the pushaway but rather allow the ball to drop freely into your backswing while you continue walking to the foul line.

if you are not beginning your swing cycle soon enough as I suspect, you will run out of steps and must hurry your forward swing and your release which causes ineffective results. Getting the ball into the swing sooner than you are doing now is the key!!!

Start your swing moving slightly before your first step and keep walking at your usual pace while allowing the ball to swing freely back and through to a full follow through position.

Naturally, this adjustment in timing will feel physically very different and you will need practice, preferably under guidance of a local professional, so you can trust the earlier timing swing sequence before bowling in competition.

There are a few good timing articles published on bowlingball.com under the BowlVersity section of the site which describe in some detail how to begin the armswing. Please, please, take time to review the articles, consider consulting with a coach, and work on earlier timing so you can improve your game.

Thanks for taking time to communicate. I wish you all the success and happiness possible and it is very nice to know you are still bowling all these years later.
